The European Union

The European Union research programme focuses on the EU’s external, security and defence policies, internal security, enlargement and neighbourhood policies, as well as the EU’s internal dynamics, institutional development and decision-making. The programme aims at deepening the EU’s image as an international actor and observes the EU policies of various Member States and their internal debate on European themes.

The Transformation of the World Order

The Transformation of the World Order research programme concentrates on the changing international power relations, especially the changing status of China and the United States, as well as transatlantic relations. The programme also studies the role of international institutions and multilateral co-operation in the face of changing international power relations.

Russia in the Regional and Global Context

The Russia in the Regional and Global Context research programme concentrates on Russia’s relations with neighbouring states as well as its relations in the broader international context, and the impact that the country’s internal development is having on foreign policy. The focus of the research programme is on relations between Russia and the West, especially the EU, as well as the Russian neighbourhood policy on political energy issues, among other things. The programme views Russia as a dynamic society which is rebuilding its relations to external factors.

International Politics of Natural Resources and the Environment

The International Politics of Natural Resources and the Environment research programme analyses the international management of climate change and related security risks, the national energy and climate policy’s impact on international relations, changes in the geo-economic status of the Arctic region, as well as the politics of Baltic Sea Protection.
