UN Climate Summit: Turning the Screw in the Countdown to Copenhagen

Tuesday’s UN summit in New York saw around 100 world leaders assemble in a bid to foster more propitious conditions for reaching a global agreement on reducing carbon emissions. Two major emerging economies representing the developing states have shifted from their previously entrenched positions. This means the pressure is now on Obama.

America steps up to the climate change plate

History was made last Friday when Congress voted to pass a bill aimed at cutting carbon emissions in the US. The House of Representatives narrowly voted 219 to 212 in favour of proposed legislation aiming to cut carbon emissions by 17% from 2005 levels by 2020 and 83% by 2050. However it is far too early to consider the US to be assuming leadership on climate change.
